Carbon Emissions Tracking Beacon.
A social design solution.
Helping people and communities visualise a sustainable future and encourage use of the train over car for shorter suburban journeys.
The Bigger Picture.
“We have seen the use of shame or guilt across a lot of platforms and organisations. We want to embody things like revitalisation and harmony, and for users to celebrate doing their part through offsetting and managing their carbon footprint.”
Andreas Homer, Aerial app co-founder, 2020
A Solution? Carbon Emission Beacon.
The Beacon works out the daily amount of carbon emissions saved compared to car and replaces existing Oyster Tap-in Points.
Beacon Form & Interaction.
Design concepts were mainly explored through sketches. The final design chosen was then taken into modelling. The object was modelled in card at scale and 1:1 for interaction before going in CAD too to explore details like interaction and colour, materials and manufacture.
Tracking Carbon Emissions.
Total emissions saved in a day create a goal for the next day for users to meet and supersede. The Beacon will reset each day after a cut-off point.
Systems & Service.
The service comes with an app which allows users to see the level of Beacons near them, in addition to tracking their own carbon emissions by seeing their journeys. The process works in about four simple steps and works by integrating into the existing system.
Manufacture & Viability.
The Beacon will have sheet metal covering, a plastic carcass, LED for the bar, wooden slack pieces at the base of the Beacon which will be tainted grey and tanalised, at the top would be a solar panel for it to be powered.
